Bart de Keizer, Continental Fruit Importers:

“Good demand and prices for cucumbers from the Canaries”

After two extremely bad years for cucumbers from the Canary Islands, this year started well. “There is good demand, prices are good, it is just the supply that could be slightly higher,” says Bart de Keizer from Continental Fruit Importers from Barendrecht, the Netherlands. The company has been importing tomatoes and cucumbers from SAT Juliano Bonny Gomez for years already, and is the largest player within the Netherlands regarding the import of cucumbers from the Canaries.

“We have been doing cucumbers from the Canary Islands for about a month. The cultivators on the Canaries have planted less, and that is very obvious when looking at the supply. We had a good start,” De Keizer says. “The Dutch season is ready, as far as we know, and the Spanish are not widely available, so there is a good market for the cucumbers from the Canaries. Demand for tomatoes from the Canary Islands, of which we do not represent the largest volume, is also fair, and prices are fairly good as well. I am very positive about the rest of the season.”

“The advantage of trade from the Canary Islands is that it has been regulated in the Netherlands, which is in contrast to the Spanish trade. Most Dutch import companies have some sort of connection to the Spanish horticulturalists. We can also sell our trade on the Dutch market very well, but Germany and Austria are our main markets on the continent.”
