Serbia: New ULO cooler storage in construction for Delta Agrar orchard in Čelarevo

At “Podunavlje” estate in Čelarevo there is a new ULO Cooler Storage being built and Company Delta Agrar will invest as much as 6 million Euro. The new ULO cooler storage will have the capacity of 6,500 tons and the construction is planned to be completed by the end of August this year. Its construction will increase the total storing capacity at “Podunavlje” estate to 13,000 tons and that will be the biggest ULO Cooler Storage in Southeast Europe in any orchard.

“Delta proposed and contributed to solving the unemployment problem in Serbia by engaging as many individual producers and family households as possible in apple production”, said President of Delta Holding Miroslav Mišković while visiting the building site. “In business the most difficult thing is to provide a market but the market for placing apples has already been secured. Delta Agrar has managed to successfully open/enter the Russian market as the largest consumer of fruit and to build the Serbian apple brand in that market. Thanks to its long-term presence in that region, Delta has the opportunity to place several times more apples than Serbia currently exports to Russia as well as to Scandinavia and other European countries.”

“In 2014 Delta Agrar is planning to produce 16,000 tons of apples in Čelarevo orchard and about 8,000 tons in cooperation, while the largest part is intended for exports. Almost 80% or this year’s apple production will be exported to Russia,” pointed out Director of “Podunavlje” estate in Čelarevo Nikola Milićević adding that 85-90% of yield contains first-class apples.

ULO (Ultra Low Oxygen) is the most contemporary system of preserving fresh apples up to 300 days. The specific feature of this cooler storage is that picked apples enter the chamber directly and without any additional chemical treatment, which is the practice with standard cooler storage.

The orchard at “Podunavlje” estate in Čelarevo currently covers the area of almost 400 hectares. So far Delta Agrar has invested 30 million Euro in this orchard. Upon the completion of the construction Delta orchard in Čelarevo will have an area of 600 hectares and two cooler storages with the capacity of 13,000 tons, so that the overall investment will reach 50 million Euro.
