10% increase of international visitors

Expoalimentaria hasn’t reached its peak yet

The fifth edition of Expoalimentaria, the most important food fair in Latin America organized by Association of Exporters of Peru (ADEX), was held from 15th - 17th October in Lima, Peru. People from around world attended the fair.

In total, there were more than 22,000 visitors this year. There were 2,377 international visitors this edition, compared to only 2,000 international visitors in 2012. Visitors came from Latin America and there was also a strong presence from the USA, Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands and Thailand. “This is a mixed fair, where you can find agricultural and fishery products. The main buyers that usually attend the fair are from North America and Europe. However, there were a lot of businessmen from Asia at this edition,” said Eduardo Amorrortu, president of ADEX.

During the exhibition, business of more than 620 million US$ has been realized between national and international businessman of the five continents. This is 24% more than the estimated 500 million US$ according to Eduardo. “The higher number of international visitors helped to increase the estimated amount. The top will be higher next year.”

Exhibitors are positive about the fair. Charles Beresford of National Produce explains that Peru is holding an important position as a worldwide food supplier, considering its category as a certified non GMO producing country. Therefore, Peru can maintain the purest organic agriculture to supply to consumers that don’t eat GMO foods. “Over 2,500 buyers from around the world came to the Expoalimentaria this year. We sold over 80 containers of our organic and conventional mangos. We have made dozens of great contacts.” They will return as an exhibitor next year, probably with a bigger booth.

“For our company Sobifruits SAC it is the third time we have participated in this fair,” says Gino Bernaola. “We are exporters of fruit and vegetables and our interest in participating in the fair is to keep in contact with our clients and producers who come to visit, as well as the new potential customers and suppliers we receive at the show. Each year we meet new customers with whom we do good business with the different products we sell.”

According some surveys, 89% of the exhibitors at Expoalimentaria 2013 are very satisfied to totally satisfied with this commercial event. Moreover, 91% said they are willing to return next year when the fair will again be in Lima. The tip given towards the organization is the timing of the exhibition. This year Expoalimentaria was in the same week as PMA (America) and Fruit Attraction (Madrid), also important fairs for the fresh produce sector.
