Italy: La Perla del Sud plum tomatoes

"Tomatoes ripen on the plants following natural rhythms and are harvested in bunches. Brix levels are checked with a refractometer, which enables us to distinguish tomatoes according to the 'Linea Viola - Alta qualità' and 'Linea Blu - Standard' ranges," explain company managers from La Perla del Sud. 

Plum tomatoes are the most popular. "Quality derives mainly from an accurate varietal choice, which is carried out periodically thanks to field tests." 

"After following plant development for months, only plants with the best organoleptic qualities (taste, Brix level, colour, shine and shelf-life) stand out. Shelf-life is essential, as many current varieties don't have a very long one leading to the loss of organoleptic qualities in just a few days." 

Just like all other La Perla del Sud products, plum tomato plants are always grafted on a parasite-resistant base. The various rootstocks are also tested and compared to find the best combination.

"Integrated cultivation techniques are used, as they are essential to guarantee high-quality healthy produce."

"Packaging is carried out by hand right after harvesting. The packaging is chosen based on client needs, but all options have been developed to improve product storage."
