Giant Avozilla avocado finalist in Innovation of the Year
The success of the product has been underpinned by collaboration between the retailer, its UK supplier Greencell and the grower Westfalia in South Africa where only four trees on the Westfalia estate were growing the variety; Madjadiskloof. The retailer worked on a product name and box design to generate excitement and its press office generated world-wide social media coverage which helped raise the profile of avocados in general.
Emma Bonny, (pictured) salads and vegetable buyer for Group Food Sourcing at Tesco said: “We are extremely proud and excited to be shortlisted as finalists for Innovation of the Year. The Avozilla is a fantastic example of source led innovation, and demonstrates the value of working in partnership with our growers to deliver exclusive innovation to our customers. It inspires both Tesco and our growers to continue developing innovation that will excite our customers, and raise the profile of the avocado category, supporting the transition from a niche food item to an everyday shopping basket favourite.”
