"The start of the blood orange harvest is expected to occur between 10 and 15 December. The outlook is favorable, and we are fairly optimistic," says Gerardo Diana, president of the Sicilian Blood Orange PGI Consortium. Etna has been covered in snow for a couple of days, which is good news. This creates a difference in temperatures, which leads to a superior red coloring that sets our product apart."

The weather has been favorable so far, and with extra irrigation, we're seeing promising yields. Of course, it is still too early to talk about yields, but our members have told us that the plants have a good load, not excessive, which should guarantee high quality.
Thanks to the new varieties introduced, supplies of PGI Sicilian blood oranges should last until April or May. "We always need the weather to be on our side," the president points out, "which supports the hard work and dedication of the farmers."
High-quality oranges on ITA Airways
The Sicilian Blood Orange PGI Consortium is at the forefront of the new campaign, 'Viaggio nelle eccellenze' (Journey into Excellence), which is promoted by ITA Airways in collaboration with Origin Italia, the Qualivita Foundation, and the Ministry of Agriculture (MASAF). "We must thank Origin Italia for once again putting Italian products with geographical indications (PGI) in the spotlight, especially in an international setting like airports during peak travel times. It is a true example of a system that works, uniting forces and sending a strong message about the high-quality standards of Italian agriculture," reads a note from the Consortium.

From November until the end of December, travelers and guests will be able to taste jams and juices made with Sicilian Blood Oranges PGI in ITA Airways lounges at Rome Fiumicino Airport (Hangar and Piazza di Spagna) and Milan Linate Airport (Runway), as well as on certain ITA Airways flights, thanks to the Consortium's active participation. The quality and connection of the Sicilian red orange to its territory and tradition will be highlighted at dozens of tasting events where these products will be served. Additionally, some events will be held in collaboration with the Consortium for the Protection of the Piadina Romagnola PGI. Past events have paired piadina with jams, and more are planned for the future. There will also be events with the Consortia for the Protection of Piadina under the umbrella of AFIDOP (the Association of Italian Protected Designation of Origin and Protected Geographical Indication cheeses).
