South Africa sees arrival of new watermelon varieties

Several new seedless watermelon varieties are now entering South African retail outlets for the summer season. The three additions – Honeybeam, SunnyGold, and Tiger Stripe – offer differing rind and flesh colour combinations and are intended to broaden consumer choice.

The Honeybeam variety has a dark green rind and yellow flesh, with a firm texture. SunnyGold features a yellow rind with red flesh. The Tiger Stripe variety has dark green striping on the rind and is smaller in size, averaging around 2.5 kg, making it suited to single-household consumption and convenience formats.

According to Pick n Pay's Business Unit Head of Produce and Horticulture, Jacqui Peacock, the retailer is introducing these colour-variant types as part of its seasonal range. She noted that the varieties may serve different uses, from table fruit to prepared platters.

Honeybeam and SunnyGold will be sold exclusively through Pick n Pay stores. The retailer stated that it is working with South African growers to supply the fruit and integrate the varieties into its summer offering.

The new watermelons will be available nationwide during the peak summer months.
