Huelva's strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry production decreased while blueberry increased

According to the Association of Strawberry Producers and Exporters of Huelva, Freshuelva, the region produced 210,345 tons of strawberries in the 2024/2025 season, a 5% decline from the previous season. This drop was caused by weather and production challenges. It was an uneven season, but export markets performed positively. Excessive rain caused damage, particularly to the earliest varieties, because it coincided with their ripening period. Demand for strawberries stayed steady throughout the season, and this fruit was highly valued in markets, partly due to varietal diversification. Prices remained similar to those of the previous season.

Raspberry production declined by 6.5% to 37,660 tons, while blackberry production dropped by 11% to 1,890 tons. In contrast, blueberry production grew by 8%, reaching 63,150 tons. This increase is partly due to the start of new plantations and extended harvesting seasons, thanks to early and late varieties.

The sector has managed to boost the overall value of its exports, with blueberries leading the growth at 350.8 million euros and a 24% rise. Strawberry exports went up by 9.5% compared to the previous year, totaling 699.3 million euros.

Raspberry exports remained nearly stable, with a slight 0.5% decrease and a total value of 229.6 million euros. Conversely, blackberry exports reversed last year's trend, increasing by 10.5% and reaching 18.3 million euros in foreign sales.

Germany and the United Kingdom continue to be the main destinations for Huelva's berries across all categories. The Netherlands is solidifying its position as the third most important market for Huelva's blueberries, while France remains the third key market for the region's strawberries and raspberries.

According to Freshuelva, despite decreases in the production of some crops, the season has shown the sector's commercial resilience and ability to adapt, as it continues to focus on varietal innovation, market diversification, and meeting the highest quality and food safety standards.

The association emphasizes the need for national and European authorities to implement measures that ensure fair competition against imports from third countries, strengthening reciprocity mechanisms—such as mirror clauses—to ensure social, labor, and environmental standards are consistent across the European market.
