Czech robot targets autonomous row crop farming

A Czech initiative, Roboton, aims to redefine row crop production with its elekRoboton Farmer, a fully electric, autonomous field robot targeting minimal human intervention. Designed for soil preparation, precision seeding, weeding, and irrigation tasks, operations are GPS-guided or vision-based. The robot functions consistently, facilitating task-switching without manual input through a standardized 3-point hitch and smart connector.

Equipped with a UR robotic arm, it manages precision operations including localised watering and weeding by regularly monitoring and mechanically managing weed growth without chemical interference. Current support for trailed tools encompasses cultivator blades, rotavators, and wide-row seeders, with system preset task parameters. Roboton is keen on expanding compatible implements based on demand, currently exploring new types.

Solar panels facilitate long, uninterrupted operational hours. Roboton Farmer docks autonomously for grid-connected battery recharge and irrigation water refills, promoting extended, unattended field operations. The modular chassis enables adaptation for various tools and missions, ensuring individual module serviceability or upgrades, thus scaling capabilities per farm needs.

The robot employs a dual-track drivetrain, boasting stable traction for smooth manoeuvres, low soil compaction, and soil health preservation. Its track system promises consistent function over varied terrain. A hybrid navigation system merges dual RTK-GNSS precision, machine vision, and LIDAR-based obstacle detection, ensuring reliable autonomous operations. Manual intervention through a controller, mobile app, or web dashboard allows task flexibility.

Fallback visual odometry and AI-powered object detection kick in for spatial orientation when GNSS signals falter, enhancing robustness under challenging conditions. Roboton Farmer is currently in tests on two Czech farms. Expansion to broader markets is anticipated in 2026, considering sale and lease agreements. Michaela Slavíček, Roboton's Chief Marketing Officer, states, "Our initial focus is on the Central European market, but we're open to discussions with partners and farmers from other regions. Expansion to additional locations is possible based on mutual interest and deployment conditions." Interest stems from research institutions, tech providers, and agri cooperatives exploring adaptations such as orchard deployment, specialty crops, AI crop monitoring, and renewable energy integration.
