The role of CEA and Integrated Pest Management in the organic produce category

More consumers than ever are seeking greater transparency from brands before making purchase decisions, especially surrounding fresh produce. Key concerns around health, sustainability, and environmental impact are driving increased demand for high-quality organically grown produce, as consumers prioritize not only the nutritional benefits but also the environmental implications of their food choices.

Mastronardi Produce, a greenhouse grower for over 70 years, uses proprietary growing techniques, Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to consistently deliver high-quality and flavorful organic tomatoes, peppers, mini cucumbers, and berries. These are all marketed under the SUNSET® brand.

Unlike traditional field growing, where growers rely on favorable weather conditions, CEA uses advanced horticultural practices and engineering techniques to improve crop yield and resource efficiency. The systems in the company's organic greenhouses carefully regulate temperature, humidity, light, and nutrient levels, creating ideal conditions for the crops to flourish. Because crops are in a controlled growing environment and shielded from environmental stressors, the risks of diseases and pest infestations are also reduced.

Alongside CEA methods, the company implemented effective IPM practices in its organic greenhouses. IPM helps create a healthier insect ecosystem in the greenhouse, allowing for more sustainable pest control. This approach has been successfully applied in its state-of-the-art greenhouse in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to grow Organic WOW® Strawberries.

Together, these methods allow Mastronardi Produce to provide quality and delicious SUNSET organic produce year-round. Current SUNSET organic offerings include the Organic Campari® Tomatoes, Organic Angel Sweet® Tomatoes, Organic Wild Wonders® Tomatoes, Organic Mini Peppers, Organic Mini Cucumbers, Organic WOW® Strawberries, Organic Summer Dream™ Raspberries, and the most recent addition, Organic Flavor Bombs® Tomatoes.
