Avocado is a global product with an important trade role for the Netherlands. The country serves as Europe's gateway for avocados from overseas. Imports into the Netherlands have increased by a quarter over the past five years, reaching more than half a billion kilos. In monetary terms, imports rose by more than 50 per cent to €1.7 billion. This is according to GroentenFruit Huis's avocado factsheet.
Most avocados come from Peru, but imports from countries such as Colombia, South Africa, Kenya, and Morocco are booming. As much as three-quarters of South Africa's total avocado exports are destined for the Netherlands, highlighting the Netherlands' key role in the global avocado trade.
The Netherlands supplies Europe with avocados. For example, 84 per cent of the avocados in Germany are sourced from the Netherlands. Dutch exports are mainly focused on Germany (27%), France (14%), and Spain (7%).
Young people are particularly fond of avocados. Pensioners account for only 20 per cent of total household purchases in the Netherlands, whereas for fresh fruit in general, they account for 36 per cent.
