Durian, the "king of fruits" known for its unique taste and strong odor, has become the top-selling pizza ingredient at Pizza Hut China. Yum China reported 30 million durian pizzas sold in 2024, making up one in every four pizzas sold nationwide. Chinese demand for durian has skyrocketed, with 1.4 million tons imported in 2023, largely driving a global surge in demand. Pizza Hut introduced durian pizza eight years ago, and its popularity has contributed over $100 million in sales. Expanding aggressively, Yum China is opening hundreds of new KFC and Pizza Hut stores, targeting China's growing middle class.
