Agriculture Minister Green highlighted importance of these crops

Boosting Irish potato and onion production in Jamaica

The Jamaican government has unveiled plans for a significant investment to enhance Irish potato and onion production in the nation. Agriculture Minister Floyd Green highlighted the importance of these crops, noting their role in supporting over 70,000 farmers and providing employment for more than 350,000 individuals. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase domestic crop yields and secure food supply for the nation.

Speaking at an agricultural show in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth, Green disclosed that $91 million is allocated for the improvement of farm roads within the region. This infrastructure development aims at facilitating better access for farmers, thus improving agricultural productivity and efficiency. Nine areas in St Elizabeth have been pinpointed for this targeted development.

Green also acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers, including drought and other adversities. However, he commended their resilience, which has led to a resurgence in onion production.
