Coachella vegetable packing plant goes up in flames

A vegetable packing plant in Coachella, CA went on fire on Thursday morning, June 6. The fire began in a 50,000 square foot plant that is owned by Daaks International, a grower-shipper of Asian vegetables. The company grows a large variety of Asian produce items, catering to the Southeast Asian community.

More than 12 hours after the fire started, it was still going, but firefighters were hopeful to have it put out by midnight. Severn firefighters were injured while combatting the flames and four of them were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to a spokesperson from Cal Fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but firefighters who arrived at the scene early on Thursday said they saw cardboard boxes on fire with flames that spread into the building.
