'Unprecedented optimism among growers'

Kiwifruit season kickoff in New Zealand shows a lot of promise

At the onset of the kiwifruit season, the New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers group reports unprecedented optimism among growers. Chief executive Colin Bond noted that, despite Cyclone Gabrielle's impact on some orchards, the majority are on track for profitable returns this harvest. Zespri's forecast for per hectare returns significantly exceeds last year's figures, particularly for green kiwifruit growers, with expected earnings between $75,000 and $91,000/ha, up from $64,930/ha. Gold kiwifruit growers are projected to earn between $145,000 and $166,000, slightly above the previous season's $143,537/ha.

While cautioning that it is early in the season, Bond highlighted the potential for high yields and market prices to drive substantial returns. The first shipment of gold kiwifruit to Asia marks the beginning of what is anticipated to be a strong season. Labour challenges have been addressed, with a significant influx of backpackers into the country. Zespri CEO Dan Mathieson underscored the robust demand for New Zealand kiwifruit, with the company expecting to export around 190 million trays this season. However, he also pointed out risks, including market challenges and adverse effects of foreign exchange rates, notably with the Japanese yen, on specific kiwifruit categories.
