Australia's almond industry reaches a new milestone

In Australia, almonds have become a staple in various diets, evident from their presence in flat whites, lunch boxes, and post-gym protein shakes. The country boasts one of the highest per capita consumption rates of almonds globally, with annual consumption exceeding a kilogram per person.

Australia's almond production has seen significant growth, with the industry expecting to surpass $1 billion in sales for the first time, positioning it as a leading horticultural crop. Despite California producing approximately 80% of the world's almonds, Australia has emerged as the second-largest producer, thanks to increasing exports to China and India. Notably, China's purchase of Australian almonds has surged from 3,000 tons to 50,000 tons in six years. Tim Jackson, chief executive of The Australian Almond Board, remarked on the industry's rapid development, highlighting its low awareness despite its substantial growth from 3,500 hectares of almond orchards in 2000 to over 62,500 hectares today.
