Portugal increased its fruit, vegetable, and flower exports in 2023

Portugal's fruit, vegetable, and flower production value stood at 5,161 million euros in 2023, i.e. 28% more than in 2022 when the value stood at 4,024 million euros, and 61% more than in 2019 when it stood at 3,204 million euros.

The country's fruit, vegetable, and flower export volume has also experienced significant growth. In 2023, the export value of these products stood at 2,303 million euros, i.e. 11% more than in 2022, and 42% more than five years before, as it went from 1,612 million euros in 2019 to 2,303 million euros in 2023. This, according to data from Portugal Fresh, an association for the promotion of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, that was revealed at the last French-Italian-Spanish-Portuguese strawberry contact group held in Teotónio-Odemira, on April 4 and 5.

In 2023 Portugal's berry exports amounted to 294 million euros, 16% more than in the previous year. In the past five years, the value of berry exports increased by 26%, going from 233 million euros in 2019 to 294 million in 2023.

Raspberry exports accounted for 70% of the value in 2023 with 206 million euros. Blueberries followed with 43 million euros. Blackberry exports amounted to 37 million euros, and strawberry exports totaled 6.7 million euros.

In the last export season, there have been strong increases in all the berries mentioned, except for strawberry, which fell. In 2023, raspberry sales abroad increased by 13% over 2022, blueberry sales by 5%, and blackberries by 27%. In contrast, strawberry sales abroad decreased by 11%, going from 7.6 million euros in 2022 to 6.7 million euros in 2023.
