In Kallnach (Seeland), farmer Ronny Köhli operates an agricultural business specializing in asparagus cultivation. His operation spans 19 hectares of agricultural land, of which ten hectares are dedicated to asparagus cultivation: 7.5 hectares for white asparagus and 1.5 hectares for green asparagus. "We also have one and a half hectares of new plantings that will be ready for harvest next year – this gives us the opportunity to replace older plantings that have become less productive after nearly a decade," the owner explains. This ongoing renewal is crucial to secure the quality and quantity of the asparagus harvest.
Raising Awareness for Swiss Produce
According to Ronny Köhli, the market for Swiss asparagus is driven by increasing consumer demands and the need to find innovative ways to utilize the produce that remains unsold. As for demand, it has stabilized over the past years, Köhli notes. "I also believe that more consumers are foregoing imported asparagus, especially the so-called air-freighted asparagus from countries like Mexico or Peru," he is convinced, adding: "For asparagus imported from Germany, Italy, or Spain, people might still turn a blind eye, but we still feel this awareness for Swiss produce."
