Banana sales in Russia plummeted by 20% in early 2024. However, the revenue in rubles surged by 18%. The simple reason behind this phenomenon is the increased cost of bananas, a trend that was already escalating in 2023. The situation was exacerbated by supply difficulties from Ecuador, which were only resolved in February.
In 2023, bananas joined the list of products that saw record price hikes, alongside cabbage and tomatoes.
Producers anticipate further price hikes for various products in 2024. Although decisions like the abolishment of import duties by authorities might momentarily contribute to price reduction, in the long run, the country may become even more dependent on friendly nations for its supplies.
