Star Group’s co-founder and CEO retires

David Karwacki, The Star Group's co-founder and long-time chief executive has retired and will act as special advisor to the CEO until May 30th, 2024. Karwacki will remain active in the long-term leadership of the organization as a shareholder and member of the Board.

"I am proud of what we have accomplished at Star and above all else I am proud of the team," said Karwacki. "We have been relentless in the pursuit of innovation and growth and I know that will continue with the exceptional leadership team we have in place."

The Star Group Board of Directors has named Deric Karolat interim CEO. Karolat has been with the company for nearly 30 years and has held various leadership roles, most recently chief operating officer.

"David Karwacki is a visionary, an inspiring leader and a friend and we will miss him as CEO," said Karolat. "That said, the company is in a great spot with a lot of bench strength, and I am honored to lead this remarkable organization."

The Star Group, founded by Gary Budd and Karwacki in 1989, has grown from a small regional tomato co-packer to a notable presence in the fresh produce industry. It has become a grower, importer, marketer, packer, distributor and processor across every major category in produce.

With leaders already in place for each of The Star Group's major divisions, the company's leadership anticipates a smooth transition.

"Two decades is a long time to be CEO," added Karwacki. "My wife Laurie and I have four kids and they keep giving us more grandkids so it is time to reduce my duties as chief executive and prioritize my role as chief grandpa."
