South Africa: Pick n Pay plunges after announcing full-year loss, stock sale
Pick n Pay, South Africa's second-largest grocery chain slumped after announcing a share sale and plans to unbundle its fast-growing Boxer chain as it struggles to cope with surging costs and competition from larger rival Shoprite Holdings. Shares of the Cape Town-based retailer dropped as much as 17.5% as it announced it might need to ask investors for as much as 4bln rands ($208mln) in a rights offer by the middle of the year to stabilize the business.

US: New Whole Foods Market in Albuquerque is now open
Whole Foods Market opened its new 47,327-square-foot store, located at 2100 Carlisle Boulevard NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on February 22 at 9 a.m. MST. Features of the relocated Albuquerque store include: a large produce department with more than 280 certified organic items available at opening and Sourced for Good produce, floral bouquets, roses and tulips. Additional produce selection includes Dekopon citrus, organic blueberries, made-in-house salsas and guacamole dips and a large orchid variety.

Brazil: GPA reports sharply narrower fourth-quarter loss
Reuters reported: "Brazilian food retailer GPA, controlled by France's Casino, reported that its fourth-quarter loss narrowed to 303mln reais ($61.36mln), improving from a loss of 1.1bln reais a year earlier".

US: Sprouts Farmers Market to open 35 new stores this year
Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. has high expectations for 2024. Amid the release of its impressive results for its fourth quarter and fiscal year in December 31 results, the specialty grocer released its outlook for the year. The outlook includes net sales growth of 5.5% to 7.5%, comparable-store sales growth of 1.5% to 3.5%, and adjusted EBIT of $397mln to $412mln. Adjusted diluted earnings per share are expected to be $2.85 to $2.95. Plus, the company anticipates approximately 35 new stores for the year.

Brazil: Assai posts profit down 27% in fourth quarter on higher debt
Brazilian cash & carry operator Assai posted a 26.8% decrease in its fourth quarter net profit from the same period in the previous year, as interest over its debt pressured the results, even tough sales were up. Still, the 297mln real ($60.17mln) net profit for the quarter came slightly above analysts polled by LSEG expectations of 286.2mln reais.
