Revitalizing mango orchards in Tamil Nadu with government subsidies

In a strategic move to enhance the agricultural landscape of Tamil Nadu, the state government has unveiled a comprehensive plan under the Special Scheme for Mukkani Development. This initiative, aimed at the 2024-25 fiscal year, seeks to revitalize mango cultivation alongside promoting jackfruit and banana production. Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, detailed the scheme's focus on converting 26,540 acres of aging mango orchards into prolific producers through subsidization. Additionally, the establishment of new mango orchards over 4,630 acres with sought-after southern varieties like Paadiri and Banganapalli, and select export varieties including Ratnagiri Alphonso on 250 acres, is on the agenda. The scheme also encompasses the distribution of growth promoters and bio-control agents to mango farmers for an expanse of 6,175 acres, backed by a financial commitment of ₹274.8 mln.

Addressing the surging demand for bananas, the government plans to extend the cultivation over 5,220 acres, with a special emphasis on propping banana bunches across 3,700 acres to prevent wind damage and distributing banana bunch sleeves for 4,440 acres to foster the production of premium, marketable bananas. This initiative is supported by a budget of ₹127.3 mln from both central and state funds. Furthermore, the Jackfruit Mission will continue its momentum, targeting an area expansion on 1,240 acres with an allocation of ₹11.4 mln, alongside establishing a Jackfruit Value Addition Centre in Panruti at a cost of ₹161.3 mln to tap into the potential of jackfruit-based products.
