Onion smuggling racket busted in Nagpur, India

In a significant operation, Nagpur Customs officials in Maharashtra, India, have cracked down on an onion smuggling syndicate, implicating three individuals, including proprietors of two export-import enterprises and a customs broker. These parties were caught attempting to illicitly transport 82.9 tons of onions, valued at approximately Rs. 5 million (€55,000), to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The smuggled onions were ingeniously concealed within refrigerated containers under the pretence of being tomatoes. The operation was unveiled at Nhava Sheva, where the containers underwent scrutiny and were subsequently confiscated by the Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch (SIIB), Nagpur. "The Customs Department has seized a large consignment of onions and a case of smuggling of onion was registered on February 15," an official, involved in the operation.
