The supply of pineapples from Costa Rica currently is down. “It’s primarily affecting the larger sizes--specifically sizes 5 and 6,” says Greg Samels, senior business development manager for Kapi Kapi Growers, who notes though that even less fruit was available at this time of the season last year.
The biggest challenge for pineapple production in the country is Mother Nature. “We have been dealing with less than optimal growing conditions for the last several months,” says Samels, adding that there have been drier conditions than expected for the fourth quarter and into 2024--a noted difference in the country’s weather pattern and one that’s resulted in smaller sizing industry-wide.
Strengthening demand
Meanwhile, demand for pineapples seems to be moderate to slightly stronger this year. “As more people become aware of the great flavor and health benefits of consuming fresh pineapple, it is becoming more of an everyday staple in the grocery basket,” says Samels.
All of this is leaving pricing higher than it was three to four weeks ago.
Looking ahead, Samels says the shipper will continue to fulfill its weekly program commitments for pineapple, including those for its Baby ORO pineapple that it introduced last year at the IFPA show in Anaheim, California. The shipping of those pineapples will begin in limited quantities this month. “However pineapple supply will continue to be short on the larger sizes creating opportunities with the smaller sizes,” he adds.
