Spain: Dia posts 3.1% sales growth in FY 2023
Spanish retailer Dia closed 2023 with year-on-year growth of 3.1% in like-for-like sales to €7.65bln, while fourth-quarter sales reached €1.98bln. Dia said in a trading update that its performance was marked by financial stability, as it prioritized profitability and debt reduction alongside sales growth.

The UK’s cheapest supermarket has compiled a set of recipes to inspire the nation when cooking, which it will continue to add to with new recipes throughout the year. The research also revealed how nearly seven in 10 (68%) will always buy bananas and potatoes, with more than half (55%) saying they always ensure apples and onions are in their basket. Meanwhile, butternut squash, pomegranate, and aubergines are at the bottom of these lists, with things like kale, asparagus, avocados, and cherries also featuring low down.

US: Kroger unveils new produce supplier biodiversity goal
The Kroger Co. announced a new goal to advance sustainability in its fresh produce supply chain, further protecting pollinators and biodiversity. Kroger will require all of its fresh produce suppliers to use Integrated Pest Management practices for all products supplied to Kroger by 2028 or 2030, based on the grower's size. Medium- to large-sized growers will be expected to meet the goal by the end of 2028 and small-sized growers by 2030.

Indiana's largest independent foodservice distribution company - Raydia Food Group, formerly Stanz-Troyer Holdings, LLC - announced that it had acquired Terre Haute, Indiana-based B & B Foods Distributors, Inc. B & B Foods, a second-generation, family-owned company, is a full-line food distributor, restaurant equipment supplier, and wholesale grocery store. The company currently enjoys $33mln in sales and has 60 employees. B & B Foods owner Scott Isles will continue to serve as president of B & B Foods, reporting to Raydia Food Group CEO Moe Alkemade.
Walmart engaged in illegal union busting at California store, U.S. agency says
Walmart has been accused by a U.S. labor agency of using a series of illegal tactics to deter unionizing at a California store. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) said it had issued a complaint alleging Walmart interrogated workers at the Eureka, California, store about their union activities, removed pro-union flyers from a break room, and threatened employees who distributed union literature in violation of U.S. labor law.
