The South African Table Grape Industry association (SATGI) reported for the 2023/24 season a total of 20.92 million cartons (4,5 kg equivalent) that were inspected for export up until week 52, which is 6% more than the same time last year. A total of 9.87 million cartons (4.5 kg equivalent) were exported up until week 52, which is 29% lower than the previous season to date.
"All five production regions are packing. The Northern Provinces and Orange River Region expect to conclude packing in the next 3-4 weeks. The top three exported varieties for week 52 were Prime, Early Sweet and Tawny Seedless," reads the SATI update.
The Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) has confirmed that all nine STS cranes are back in service and 21 RTGs are available. Two berths are currently operational. Both the CTCT and the Multipurpose Terminal (MPT) experienced challenges in the last weeks due to equipment breakdowns and strong winds. Productivity at the port remains lower than required for optimal efficiency.
Regional Updates
The Northern Region is currently packing Autumn Crisp, Sweet Globe and Crimson and expects to conclude in the next three to four weeks. Based on current data, the harvest size is expected to be slightly lower than the anticipated crop estimate. Over Christmas weekend rain fell in some areas, although the harvest was not impacted. Overall, the harvest is healthy with a good berry size. Cooler temperatures experienced over the last few days meant that Brix have developed more slowly. Good weather is forecast for the foreseeable future.
The Orange River Region is currently packing Thompson, Sweet Celebration and Timco and is about 85% complete. The region should finish packing in the next four weeks. Kakamas and Upington experienced some rain in the last weeks, however there was no impact on grapes. Overall, the harvest is healthy with good berry size. Good weather is forecast for the foreseeable future.
All areas in the Olifants River Region are currently packing. Early cultivars were 10-15% lighter than expected. Mid and late season cultivars are seven days earlier than last season. Weather outlook for the foreseeable future is favourable. The first arrivals are expected in the EU from the 6/7th January.
Packing in the Berg River Region is progressing well. The region has mostly experienced warm and dry weather. Some rain fell over December, however there was no impact on grapes. Berry weight is lower than last year, likely due to cooler September weather. Some late cultivars are seven days later than last season.
The Hex River Region is progressing well, a healthy harvest has been reported. Colouring of red and black grapes has been good, with good quality and size of berries reported. Some rain fell over the last weekend, however there was minimal impact on grapes, and this is not expected to impact the harvest.
