Jim Ruiz, CEO and Founder of Agricola Nuestra Tierra

Peru exports more than 40 percent of its mango by air

The Peruvian mango season in the valleys of Piura is entering its critical weeks. According to Jim Ruiz, CEO and founder of Agrícola Nuestra Tierra, to date, 5,426 metric tons of mango have been exported by sea, i.e. 12.2% of the volume accumulated at week 50 of 2022.

In contrast, Ruiz stated, 4,066 tons have been exported by air, which accounts for 93.3% of the accumulated by week 50 of the 2022 season.

"What does this mean? It means that in this campaign, 42.84% of the available mango is being exported by air, which is a very high share. It also explains the high costs of the fruit for the maritime mango market, in addition to the flexibility of the quality parameters that we are seeing compared to the mango that is exported by air," he said.

"Last season the percentage of volumes exported by air versus by sea stood at 8.7%. The difference is abysmal," he added.

This is a complex reality for Peruvian families linked to the mango cluster, as good prices only benefit one group, but affect the vast majority, he stated. On a positive note, the threat of rainfall seems to have decreased.
