Ecuador sees 6.3% increase in banana exports for October 2023

Ecuador has had a 6.36% growth in banana exports compared to the same period of the previous year, although pre-pandemic levels have not yet been reached. For the month of October 2023, accumulated exports were 292.38 million boxes of bananas.

In 2022, exports were 2/4.90 million boxes of bananas, which represents an increase of 6 .36%, that is, 1.48 million additional boxes of bananas were exported for the period.

The statistics are based on the latest reports for October, 2023, issued by the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) and the Ecuador Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec).

Of the 292.38 million boxes of bananas exported in 2023, the European Union accounts for 29.30% of global exports, positioning itself as the main export destination. In 2023, a total of 85.68 million boxes were shipped, in contrast to 2022, exports were 72.35 million boxes, which represents an increase of 18.42%. The second destination for banana exports was Russia with 21.40%, which represents a shipment of 62.57 million boxes. By 2022, accumulated exports to this same destination reached around 63.14 million boxes, which represents a decrease of 0.90%, that is, a drop of 0.5/ million boxes.

At the regional level, the greatest reductions in banana boxes are evident in Eastern Europe, EFTA Europe and Central Asia. Eastern Europe reduced its import of Ecuadorian bananas by 31.68%, going from importing 6.32 million boxes in 2022 to 4.32 million boxes in 2023, that is, 2.00 million boxes not exported to this region. Likewise, Europe EFTA decreased its level of import of Ecuadorian fruit by 12.99%, that is, 0.18 million fewer boxes exported to this destination in 2023 compared to 2022. Central Asia is another region that reported a reduction in the quantity of fruit, in 2022, 9.05 million boxes were exported to this region, while, in 2023, the export level rose to 8./4 million, that is, 0.30 million boxes that were not sent this year.

On the other hand, the United Kingdom reported an increase in its level of purchase of Ecuadorian bananas. In 2023, 0.60 million additional boxes were exported to this region. Reaching 4.12 million boxes this year. In the European Union, compared to 2022, bought 13.33 million additional boxes of Ecuadorian bananas.
