Stable prices for Mexican avocados in US

Mexican producers and exporters are seeing good stable pricing of avocados in the US market says Itzi Peña, from Alejandrina Avocados, who are a group of producers and exporters from Mexico.

Itzi Peña, from Alejandrina Avocados.

“The avocado consumption in the US has been growing a lot in the market. Normally during the Super Bowl period we see consumption of avocados skyrocket. However, fortunately there is good consumption of avocados all year round. Right now because we are in the peak of the season, the price is stable,” states Peña.

She says the company are one of the first to prepare and supply guacamole for more than 30 years and are avocado growers for more than 50 years. They are based close to Uruapan, Michoacán in Mexico. They produce Hass avocado and export it to the US as their main market as well as Canada, Europe and Japan. The group also has an office in Monterrey and process avocados in the US in Orange Country, California. “We normally do between 18-20 container loads per week from Mexico to the US,” says Peña.

Pena says they don’t only rely on the Super Bowl to drive sales but place a lot of money and effort into marketing in the US all year round. “We’ve been doing a lot of marketing of avocados in the US market. That keeps the consumption of avocados very stable throughout the year. We also have another major date where consumption is very high, that is Cinco de Mayo, from the week of 1 May each year, where the volume movement is very good here in the US.”
