US: Save A Lot incorporates The Dream Vault to fight food insecurity in Chicago
A new Save A Lot store on Chicago's South Side has become the site of an innovative solution to food insecurity: to mark its third anniversary, non-profit organization Dion's Chicago Dream has launched The Dream Vault, a locker-based system to dispense fresh produce to those in need. The network-enabled bank of lockers is designed to provide 200 households living within a 1-mile radius of the store with fresh fruits and vegetables at no cost to them. Every week, a recipient can enter a code and pick up a box of produce.

UK: Tesco CEO urges supermarkets to report on food waste
Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy is calling on supermarkets to report their own food waste data to help "turn the tide" on the amount of food waste produced worldwide. He said that Tesco has not sent any food to landfill since 2009 and was the first retailer in the UK to publish its food waste data in 2013.
New Zealand: Northland brothers sell kūmara at half the price of supermarkets
A Northland grower passionate about health, nutrition, and providing fresh produce at fair prices is fighting to keep vege and fruit prices down. With vegetables and fruit at record highs due to a burgeoning cost-of-living crisis, causing many families to forgo them altogether, Kerikeri resident Joe Thistlethwaite is on a mission to keep their prices as low as possible. With kūmara selling for $14 a kg at Countdown and $13.50/kg at New World, Thistlethwaite, who has been in the growing industry since he was a kid, can manage to sell the precious sweet spud for just $5/kg. Northland kūmara growers were slammed earlier this year after Cyclone Gabrielle tore through their crops following an entire summer of heavy rain and bad weather. Northern Wairoa Vegetable Growers Association president Doug Nilsson said the cyclone was "the only reason" for the price hikes.
UK: Ocado shares plunge 20% in worst fall for 11 years
Ocado lost a fifth of its value, suffering its worst drop in 11 years after it was downgraded by a City broker. The stock fell 19.9%, wiping nearly £1.4bln off the online supermarket group's value - shaving £32mln off the stake held by co-founder and chief executive Tim Steiner.

Riverford, based at Sacrewell Farm, has launched a petition urging the Government to create tougher protections for fruit and vegetable producers from the big six supermarkets.
Lidl profits under pressure
To be precise, it is the Lidl Stiftung, the supermarket chain's holding company, that saw its net profit fall by almost 500mln euros to 1.64bln euros in the financial year to 28 February. That amounts to a profit margin of just 2.0 %, Lebensmittel Zeitung calculated.
