Christian Steep of Bavaria Saat Vertriebs GmbH:

"Uta table potato remains stable in color and quality until the end of May"

Bavaria Saat Vertriebs GmbH is presenting two new varieties for new registration in 2023, namely Jutta and Uta. "Jutta is an early table potato in maturity group I that can be harvested after about 110 days with a firm skin. It scores with a good tuber set and a proportionally high grading in the market ware of 35-65 mm. The oval and yellow-fleshed variety has only a slight tendency to darken after cooking and to discolor raw mash with a starch content of about 13 percent, which is why it will certainly find a place in the processing industry," comments Christian Steep, sales manager at the company.

He also points out the excellent resistances of the already pre-germinated Jutta. "It has a low tendency to cook darkening and good scab and Y virus resistance. In addition, we have been able to establish in trial cultivation that it can be used in the early growing regions of Europe," Steep continues.

The two varieties 90 days after planting. Three perennials were planted in each case. Jutta is a cross between the sire Sevim and the dam Tessa, while Uta was created from the sire Ivetta and the dam Queen Anne. The Uta also has a wide nematode resistance Ro 1,3,5 Pa 2,3.

Color and quality stable until the end of May
The second variety innovation named Uta was not pregerminated and belongs to maturity group I. Steep: "It impresses with its good set and uniform appearance, which is why it will achieve a very high market produce yield. In addition, it has a round tuber shape and deep yellow flesh in cooking type A. However, what particularly speaks for the variety is the low tendency to cooking darkening, raw pulp discoloration as well as tuber interior defects. It is particularly suitable for growing regions where nematode problems are prevalent, as it is not susceptible and does not draw."

Christian Steep (here at Fruit Logistica 2023) represents the Bavarian breeding company in northern Germany.

Similar to Jutta, Uta is characterized by broad nematode resistance, the company adds. "Uta is a food storage potato that stands out for its storability. Due to its good dormancy, it can be stored in cold storage at 5 °C without any problems until the end of May or, at best, even mid-June. It has an extremely stable color and quality even at the end of storage," says Steep, pointing out the marketing potential in the late range.

The potato cannot tolerate temperatures above 32 °C for several days. In these countries, varieties with shorter vegetation, i.e. maturity groups I and II, perform particularly well. "If these temperatures come our way in the longer term, potato cultivation here will have to cut back. In addition, it could also mean that varieties with a vegetation period of 150 days or longer and a higher yield potential may eventually have to be relocated to other regions," it concludes.
