Papua New Guinea onion farmers in need of market access

In Papua New Guinea, the Daulo Community Cooperative Society is focused on sustaining the commercial viability of bulb onions. Chairman Johnathan Inapelo said they have been producing and supplying bulb onions during non-coffee seasons. According to Inapelo, onion is growing well organically in their district. However, getting them to the markets is a challenge.

"Our challenge is the road condition.' Inapelo added. “When it rains. the condition of our district roads gets worse. Vehicles do not come around during wet seasons and our produces perish while waiting to be transported to the markets.“

He said so far they have been supplying their bulb onions to Goroka, Lae. Port Moresby and Manus and are looking at expanding their market base.

"We aim to contribute towards replacing import of bulb onions and expand to overseas markets,” Inapelo said, adding they have not been supported by anyone since their establishment in 2018. But they have been consistently producing and supplying bulb onions while they look for more marketing avenues.
