Czech police find massive shipment of drugs in banana crates

Czech police officials have seized 646 kilograms of cocaine hidden among bananas heading for a local supermarket. It yet another case where boxes with exotic fruit contained some other South American goods as a ‘bonus’. The drug, found in boxes that arrived from Ecuador via Amsterdam, is estimated to be worth USD 91 million, which makes it one of the largest shipments discovered by police in the Czech Republic.

Lucie Šmoldasová, spokeswoman for the National Anti-Drug Central, said investigators have initiated criminal proceedings to find out who sent the package and to whom it was addressed. As it is an international case, they will cooperate with their colleagues from Interpol and Europol.

The spokeswoman said that the value of the drug varies depending on the market and the quality of the cocaine, and the purity of the found substance will now be examined by experts from the Institute of Criminal Investigation.
