Ukraine needs up to 12 billion UAH (approximately 300 million euros) to preserve its vegetable harvest, according to Andriy Marushchak, the Commercial Director of Van Dijk Technics. He suggests that at least 300,000 tons of vegetable storage capacity should be built in Ukraine.
Before the war, Ukraine had around 800,000 tons of storage capacity, with 600,000 tons allocated for potatoes and 200,000 tons for other vegetables. However, due to a lack of funds, the optimal capacity of 1.4 million tons for potatoes and 300 million tons for vegetables was never realized.
In the largest vegetable-growing region of Kahovka, a storage facility with a capacity of 150,000 tons was partially destroyed and cannot be restored.
Marushchak estimates that it would cost 3-4 billion UAH (approximately 70 -95 million euros) to rebuild the destroyed storage facilities and 9-12 billion UAH (approximately, 215 - 300 million euros) to reach optimal vegetable storage capacity in Ukraine.
