There are strong supplies of avocados in the marketplace right now as the industry gears up for Cinco de Mayo, a notable high avocado consumption holiday. “There are excellent supplies of avocados coming from Mexico,” says Calavo Growers Inc.’s Peter Shore.
Meanwhile, the California season is starting with promotable volumes projected from now through July. “California’s season has been slow to start with all of the rain and the cooler temperatures this winter and spring,” says Shore.
At the same time, both Colombia and Peru are also shipping light volumes of avocados to the U.S. market. Back in Mexico, the season out of Jalisco will also begin in early May.
2022 vs. 2023
All of this means things look very different than they did at this time last year. In 2022, avocados at this time had limited supplies and high prices while to date, 2023 has so far had steady and ample supplies with consistent pricing.
As for demand, given the holiday ahead in early May, there is already strong continuous demand with good Cinco de Mayo promotions in place. “Pricing on avocados has been very steady this year,” adds Shore.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to see an excellent harvest of avocados in Mexico,” says Shore. “California will be increasing harvest over the coming weeks with peak volumes in May, June and July and we will have California avocados until September.”
