Peruvian Tacna pomegranates conquer the US market

Authorities certified the first container of pomegranates that will be marketed to the United States. The container had 18 tons of fruit that were produced in the department of Tacna. The certification event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Family Agriculture Development and Agricultural Infrastructure and Irrigation, Christian Barrantes, and the director of Plant Health of the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), Orlando Dolores.

Pomegranate production has become a great commercial opportunity for Tacna farmers, who during the 2022 campaign managed to certify a total of 50 hectares of pomegranate, in full production.

According to official records, this product is exported from January to July of each year. To date, the Peruvian pomegranate has access to 36 international markets. The main destinations for this fruit are the Netherlands (61%), Canada (8%), the United Kingdom (5%), Russia (5%), and the Arab Emirates (3%), among others.

Agro-export growth
Tacna joins the list of departments involved in the export of this fruit; which currently concentrates its production in Ica, with an 80% share, followed by Arequipa (13%), Lima (5%), Lambayeque (1%), and Ancash (0.1%).

Last year the volume of pomegranate exports increased by 27% over the 2021 campaign.

SENASA has two important roles in agro exports, ensuring that the plants and plant products that Peru exports are not a means for the dissemination of quarantine pests to the importing country; and continue generating new commercial windows for Peruvian products.
