The first nectarines and peaches of Huelva's stone fruit season

"As every year, we are among the first to start marketing Spanish stone fruit"

Huelva's stone fruit campaign started at the end of last week with the marketing of the first greenhouse nectarines by Plus Berries. The harvest started on its usual dates and with a greater coloration than usual in the earliest fruits.

“Last Friday we started to market the first white flesh nectarines of the campaign and we'll soon start marketing the first yellow flesh nectarines and white flesh peaches,” stated Victoria Martin, from the marketing and sales department of Plus Berries.

“We thought we would start harvesting later due to the low temperatures there were between mid-January and the end of February. However, the high temperatures throughout the month of March have caused us to end up harvesting on the usual dates,” Victoria stated. “This year's fruit has spectacular brightness and color,” he added.

Huelva's crops will have good yields this year, as they were not affected by the frosts. “Huelva is the production area that usually has the least problems due to inclement weather. In our case, we also produce in macro-tunnels, which protect the fruit and allow us to always guarantee the supply,” Victoria Martin stated. “The caliber of the fruit will depend on the varieties, so some varieties will have more medium sizes and others will have larger calibers. Brix levels are higher in this campaign, at least in these early varieties.”

“As every year, we are among the first to start marketing Spanish stone fruit,” the marketing manager of Plus Berries stated. “At the moment, there is little supply in the market and there is a lot of demand from European distributors to start with Spanish stone fruit. In addition, there is currently little overseas supply.”

Plus Berries produces and markets around 4 million kilos of extra-early stone fruit in April and May, a large part of which is grown under Zero Waste standards, which it sells both to the national market and to other European Union countries. Plus Berries also has productions in Badajoz and Portugal with another 10 million kilos extending the service to customers until the end of the Spanish stone fruit campaign with donut peaches, nectarines, peaches, and plums.
