Julien Cremer has been marketing bagged salad for 15 years, which he now sells through his own company, Sud ImpEx, under the brands Terre D'Or and El Lancero. "We found a private producer who provides us with very good quality products. We sell the sucrine and romaine lettuce every month of the year, with a summer and winter season. We work with the Cresta®, oval Salat® varieties, and the Caribu®, which is less well-known but crunchy and very tasty. The Cresta variety has been registered by the producer. This tasty salad was obtained after nine years of research and studies carried out by technicians from a traditional selection."
In the current production context in Spain, crops have suffered from cold temperatures, summer heat, and diseases. "All these concerns have direct consequences on the volumes, which also makes prices fluctuate." Today, the company must wait six weeks for the maturation of the seed to the plant before putting the salad in the ground. "We only work with products in the ground. We produce our own seedlings and plants with a storage area of 35,000m² for seedlings."
Despite these concerns, the company expects large volumes and quality products this year. "Producers no longer plant without knowing the minimum price guaranteed to ensure their production, but we must remain focused on quality to satisfy our clients rather than on the price. We work by weight for products such as the romaine lettuce, which weighs about 500g with a fleshy heart and a very crunchy leaf, because we select the best varieties." This seems to be a winning strategy since the demand for sucrine and romaine lettuce remain substantial despite the notable drop in purchasing power.
