Tomato producers in Bangladesh face losses due to an oversupply of the crop on local markets, which is typical for this time of the year. Due to this, they have to sell the tomatoes for Tk 2 per kg ($0.02) while it retails for Tk 30 per kg ($0.28).
Producers in the southwest division of Khulna, Bangladesh, do not have efficient systems and all plant at the same time, causing the oversupply, local experts say. They advise producers to diversify their crops to share information to avoid this situation.
The tomatoes prices do not cover the transport and input costs. They are forced to distribute it free of charge while offering some for cattle feed.
