Low national supply reduces Brazilian banana exports in 2022

Brazilian banana exports fell in 2022. Data released by the country’s Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) indicate that the volume shipped to the European Union was 10,600 tons in 2022, a 44% drop compared to 2021. As for intra-Mercosur exports, the amount was 73,900 tons, down 16% in the same period.

According to Hortifruti/Cepea, the decrease in exported volume is due to a low national supply of dwarf bananas, which made domestic sales difficult, as well as climate impacts and less-intense crop handling practices (due to the high cost).

On the other hand, the revenue generated from exports to Mercosur increased by 14% in 2022, as the low supply on the whole bloc boosted average prices.
