Rio Negro and Neuquen's pear and apple exports fall

Rio Negro and Neuquen's pear and apple exports in 2022 fell compared to 2021. According to the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA), during 2022 sales fell by 10% and 19%, respectively, compared to 2021.

Northern Patagonia demanded a differential exchange rate. In addition, it highlighted the opportunities that these productions have in markets, such as Russia.

The Minister of Production and Agribusiness of Rio Negro, Carlos Banacloy, said that these decreases force producers to market their pears and apples more marginally and more in the domestic market. According to SENASA data, pear exports decreased from 296,941 tons in 2021 to 268,333 tons in 2022. Apple exports went from 74,339 tons in 2021 to 60,086 tons in 2022.

According to SENASA's data, the main destination markets for the region's pears were Brazil with 96,470 tons, Russia with 45,592, the United States with 39,923, and Italy with 16,820 tons. The main markets for apples were Brazil with 17,718 tons; Bolivia with 10,817, and Paraguay with 7,552.

Minister Banacloy said there were opportunities for growth and said that there was a demand for pears. “Russia and the countries that have stopped producing pears because they have no water or land to grow them are interested in our product,” he said.

“We are looking for an alternative to this macroeconomic situation, to give the pear and apple productive sector the possibility of being paid as it deserves,” he added.
