Onion farmers in Kyrgyzstan doubling their yield per hectare

“We’ve started using drip irrigation systems for onion cultivation”

The cultivation of onions in Kyrgyzstan is improving thanks to the use of new systems and technologies, says onion farmer Abdykerimov Eldiar, who works as a solo entrepreneur: “The onion harvest in Kyrgyzstan saw slightly more volumes than last year. There are challenges here when it comes to cultivation, mostly with irrigation. The systems that we used are very old and there’s been a lack of rain in general. However, most farmers are now changing their systems, and we’ve started using drip irrigation systems at our company, which was a great improvement from the old system. And useful, as weather has been really hot this season.”

Making use of the new technologies has increased the yield for the onion farmers, sometimes even doubling the output. “Farmers in Kyrgyzstan have also started using better fertilizer recently, which combined with the drip irrigation has given them a larger yield for the onions. Where we would normally harvest 40 tons per hectare, the yield has now been up to 90 tons per hectare. We have big ambitions, as we would like to export the onions from the Kyrgyzstan mountain towards the European market. Prices when using a refrigerated truck will be around €0.50 to €0.55 per kilogram. We’d also love to find onion seed suppliers from the Netherlands or other European countries to test new varieties to grow here,” Eldiar concludes.
