Seminar of the PDO Peaches and Apricots of France: “We will have to adapt to the distributors’ demands”

The PDO Peaches and Apricots of France has reviewed the 2022 campaign and is “preparing” for the next one. This was the focus of the two-day internal seminar that took place a week ago in Avignon, with more than 80 participants. “The seminar was organized at the right time because the current economic crisis is impacting and will continue to impact our sectors in the coming weeks and months. The 2023 season must therefore be prepared and take this situation into account. With this in mind, we wanted to discuss how the sector could be affected and what levers can be put in place,” explains Raphaël Martinez, director of the PDO Peaches and Apricots of France. 

Among the guests called to testify at the seminar: Alexis Gegouy, general director of Interfel, Pierre Venteau, director of ANPP, Stéphanie Prat, director of FNPFruits, Hervé Lecharpentier, director of Maraîchers Français and Damien Chapoulart, sourcing manager fruit at Andros. Cerfrance Gard was also present and provided information on cost price increases in 2022 and the prospects for 2023.

Cost prices, the main challenge of the next campaign
“We wanted to focus on the most important issues for next year. And economic matters are high on the agenda. We will have to meet the demands from distributors which revolve strongly around prices, without eliminating the rest!,” explains Raphael Martinez, referring to environmental concerns and product quality. The PDO Peaches and Apricots of France noted a continued increase in market share for entry-level products during the 2022 campaign. “The modernity of the orchards as well as the respect of the environment are also criteria that are taken into account, and we will have to find a way to respond to these two concerns. We must be able to offer prices that are adapted to the consumers’ situation.”

“Coordinating knowledge”
Following this seminar, the PDO is “working on the knowledge of the cost price in order to control it on any segment of the market. We must coordinate this knowledge, through better communication between the companies, in order to contribute to the fluidity of the market and set up prices above this cost price.” This is the producers’ main concern, as the pressure from distributors continues to increase.
