Murcia's table grapes are expected to reach Thailand's markets starting next season

The Government of the Region of Murcia is working to accelerate the deadlines that will allow table grape producers in the region to export to Thailand in the next campaign, after several years of complex processes. "This will allow us to place one of our most recognized products in the markets of one of the leading countries of Southeast Asia," stated the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment, and Emergencies, Antonio Luengo, during his visit to Asia Fruit Logistics, in Bangkok.

The regional trade delegation is headed by the Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Table Grapes, and Other Agrarian Products (Apoexpa), together with Distinet Murcia, Natural Alliance, Uniland S. Cooperativa, ITUM, Moyca, El Ciruelo, Grupo Hortiberia, Frutas Torero, and Hispagroup.

According to the sector, the work to be able to export table grapes to Thailand began in 2019. The process was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which paused negotiations. Negotiations were resumed last summer when an inspection delegation from Thailand visited the Region of Murcia to certify all the steps of the production chain.

After the visit of the Thai delegation, we expect that we'll soon receive the final authorization from the Government of Thailand for the export of the product. Thus, our presence in this edition of the fair is more relevant than ever because of the commercial contacts that we're having with local buyers, Luengo stated.

Currently, the Region of Murcia exports 200,000 tons of table grapes per year, worth 400 million euro. The Region exports its table grapes to the European Union, the United States, Canada, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. These figures place the community as the main producer and exporter at the national level.
