Washington apple grower celebrates 10th year of Sweetie season

FirstFruits Farms kicks off the 10th year of growing and selling the apple known as “Gala’s sweeter, crunchier cousin.” The Sweetie apple variety, which the grower grows in Wallalula, Washington, contains some of the best attributes from the Royal Gala and the Braeburn varieties. The apple was originally discovered in France.

“Our consumers eagerly await Sweetie season every year,” says Chuck Zeutenhorst, president of FirstFruits Marketing. “This year marks our 10th year of the Sweetie season and we look forward to another successful year of satisfying our consumers.”

Sweetie apples have a sweet taste and firm texture and their red color is accented by a golden yellow, making them appealing not only to the taste but sight as well. The apple can be a snack or used for cooking and baking.

Sweetie season will kick off in the next few weeks. The variety will be available at select retailers within the West and Southwest and is also seeing a growing presence in the East. Although minimally, the apples have also been exported into Central America and Canada.
