The well-known sweet and soft netted muskmelon is available all year long because production areas are distributed throughout China. This year the temperatures were high and rainfall frequent, which affected the growing period of muskmelons in a large number of muskmelon plantations. Ms. Zhou of Shenzhen Yizhiyi Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. recently talked about current conditions in the muskmelon industry.
"Netted muskmelons endure the heat relatively well compared to other fruits. They are easy to store, so the warm weather does not easily affect them. However, frequent rainfall will reduce the sugar content and leads to more damaged muskmelons in the field. Luckily, the sugar content of netted muskmelons seems to be unaffected. The flavor and sweetness are more or less the same as last year," said Ms. Zhou.
Netted muskmelon production areas are distributed throughout China, including in Hainan, Yunnan, Gansu, and Hebei. Weather conditions dictate when the muskmelons from various production areas enter the market. "The overall production volume and purchase price are more or less the same as last year. August marks the official start of the netted muskmelon season in Gansu. The production volume slightly declined because of weather conditions, so the price temporarily rose by around 10%-20%, but then quickly dropped again to regular levels," said Ms. Zhou.
The price and sales volume of netted muskmelons have been stable in recent years. The sales volume is expected to expand during the period leading up to Mid-Autumn Festival [10 September, 2022].
"Netted muskmelons are considered a common fruit, and the price rarely fluctuates. The netted muskmelon varieties are all rather similar and consumers have limited options. There are some plantations working on new netted muskmelon varieties, so that there will be more diversity in the market. That would satisfy more diverse consumer demand and stimulate sales."
