The data shared by FAOSTAT on cucumber production in two major producing countries, Spain and the Netherlands, shows the difference in yield per area in the cultivation of this vegetable.
According to Hortoinfo's data, the Netherlands' cucumber production yields were almost seven times higher than the Spanish yields.
In 2019, the Netherlands produced a total of 410.25 million kilos of cucumber on 600 hectares, reaching a yield of 68.38 kg/m², with an original value of 294.68 million euros and an average price of €0.72/kg.
That year, Spain produced 739.2 million kilos on 7,420 hectares, obtaining an average yield of 9.96 kg/m², a value of 387.94 million euros, and an average price of € 0.52/kg.
It's worth noting that practically all cucumbers in the Dutch territory are produced in greenhouses, while Spain's greenhouse cucumber production only accounts for a fifth of its total production. However, taking as an example the province of Almeria, which houses the majority of Spanish greenhouses - and based on data from the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucía-, in the 2019/2020 campaign, Spanish greenhouse production had an average yield of 10.9 kg/m² (6.27 times lower than in the Netherlands).
