“We have fewer apples available than we did around the same time last year”

Not all Polish apple exporters have large quantities of apples in stock. Although the season hasn’t been the best they’ve ever had, one exporter claims they’re confident they’ll sell all of their apples before the season comes to an end. They’re even looking forward to the next product on their agenda - sweet cherries.

With the Polish apple season getting closer to its end, Mateusz Wajnert, head of sales for Polish apple exporter Galster, feels it’s not been the worst season overall: “I remember better seasons. On the other hand, I can’t complain, as we did a good job with our clients this year. We also presented Galster in new markets, as we’ve been working for multiple years to get access to these markets. The missing cherry on top, is the fact that the scale of the shipments wasn’t on a high level. Many countries in Europe have had good apple crops themselves, so they weren’t that interested in obtaining Polish apples. To make things more difficult, we also had many problems with both availability and high prices of the freight for long distance shipments.”

Although there have been exporters saying they still have a lot of volumes of apples in stock, this isn’t the case for Galster, Wajnert explains. They’ll even be able to switch to another product soon.

“It’s true that some are saying that we have still have a lot of Polish apples available. However, I don’t know about other company’s stocks. From our point of view, we have less apples available than we did around the same time last year. I’m absolutely sure we’ll be able to sell all of our apples on time. We will continue to supply our old customers and are still trying to develop in new markets. That is the simple plan. We want also to prepare well for the sweet cherries season, which will start at the second part of June. Last year we made large investments in our cherries orchards and we would like to be as well-prepared for the selling season as possible.”

Wajnert attended Fruit Logistica as a visitor, meeting with both current and potential new clients: “Fruit Logistica is always an important event for me. In Galster, we care about the relationships with our customers. Fruit Logistica is a great opportunity to drink some coffee with them at least this one time in the year. Meeting with potential new customers face to face is also more effective in my opinion, rather than giving them a call or sending out an email.” He concludes.
