Australian & NZ produce companies show a sense of humour with April Fool's Day product announcements

After some challenging times across the Australian and New Zealand fresh produce and horticulture industry, it is good that a strong sense of humour still exists. Here are some of the April Fool's Day jokes that appeared on social media today, with companies showing great creativity by announcing some comical new products. Do not hold your breath as we are guessing it might be a very, very long time before they actually make it to market! But, hopefully, they give you a bit of a chuckle heading into the weekend.

"ATTENTION LEFT HANDERS! Did you know - Over 85% of pears are eaten as palm fruit, meaning they're eaten directly as they are with our hands? Because pears are traditionally grown for the benefit of the majority - right handers - left handers experience an excessive amount of drips (at least 50% more) as you’re essentially eating it backwards. Not only this but there’s an uneven distribution of flavour as a majority of fruit grows on the right side of the tree.

Our local growers have heard these concerns and have answered with a solution! The left handed pear, grown specifically for left handers on the left side of the tree is available exclusively at independent fruit & veg shops around SA.

If you know any lefties, tag them!"

"COMING SOON, our newest product: Green Machine Potatoes

Our Golden Gourmet Potatoes, Duets and Purple Hearts are such a hit, we decided to branch out.

You may have previously thrown out your green spuds, but they are great sources of antioxidants and vitamins.

Check out these new supergreens, coming to a supermarket near you."

"This is something we have been working on for a little while and we are excited to announce the world's first square potatoes - Potato³!

Better for storage, easier to prepare and chop, and most importantly the same great taste we know and love. Available very soon!"

"Here it is. The first glimpse of our new variety called the Dapple.

How did it get the name Dapple?

Double + Apple = Dapple. This apple is crisp, crunchy, and has a nice balance of sweetness. These apples have lovely flavour with double the taste of any other apple. They even are twice as good for you as they have double the fibre. And you only need to buy half as many because they go twice as far, so there is a lot less wastage. These Dapples are not to be confused with their cousin called the Pair.

These have strictly limited availability; in fact, they will probably sell out by noon."

"WA researchers breed a-peel-ling new banana

20 years of WA research has culminated in a new variety of banana that grows without a peel.

The new variety, ANBBP01, was designed with people who don’t like touching banana peels in mind, as well as toddlers and Mario Kart characters.

Lead Researcher Breanna Inpajamas said the new variety would be unique to the market.

There’s definitely export potential, once we can figure out how to get the bananas down from the tree without squishing them.

We think the skin-free breeding technique could also be applied to pineapples and pomegranates."
