Cristina Pérez, of Interterra: "We are the only entity certified in the integrated production of persimmon"

"Markets are responding well to our persimmon supply for six months of the year, from September to February"

The Sharoni persimmon campaign is underway in the Spanish region of Andalusia with very good prospects. "Although no one can be exempt from pests and adverse weather phenomena, we are fortunate to be able to produce our Sharoni in our own farms in the province of Huelva, in the heart of the Costa de la Luz. It is the southernmost producing area in Europe, which gives us more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and excellent temperatures, which ensure a good harvest every year," says Cristina Perez, from the Andalusian company Interterra, specialized in this fruit.

"We were the first and we remain the only specialists in Sharoni, not only in Spain, but in Europe and in the northern hemisphere in general. We are currently the only entity certified in integrated persimmon production," says Cristina. "There is gradual growth in our farms and the introduction of processes to enhance the qualities of this very special product."

"The markets are responding well to our persimmon supply for six months of the year, from September to February, and they appreciate the unique organoleptic qualities of the Sharoni, a much crispier and sweeter persimmon, which adapts very well to new fresh fruit and take away consumption trends."

"We expect the Sharoni campaign to remain intense in January and February, months in which we encourage our customers in Europe and beyond to include the product in their programs and put it on their shelves, available to their customers."

One of the advantages of the Sharoni is that it is not limited in logistical terms, says Cristina Pérez, since it is a fruit that "withstands travel well" and reaches distant destinations without it losing its quality. "We have always had a strong exporting vocation, and this, together with the improvement of the logistics, has allowed us to reach every corner of the world. We are maintaining our share of the European market, expanding our presence in overseas markets and continuing to break down barriers to our entry into new countries. This commercial strategy is allowing us to face the difficulties that arise every year at the global level, and we are able to choose which markets to target at any given time."

A delicious, nutritious and functional fruit
Persimmons are a great source of antioxidants and have been in the spotlight of several research studies that have delved into the fruit's functional properties and health benefits. One of the latest has been carried out in Japan, and it has shown that the juice of persimmons, rich in tannins, can help fight the coronavirus.

"The persimmon is an ancient fruit, with deep roots in Asian culture, and that's for a reason. Current studies have confirmed the nutritional and healthful qualities of the Sharoni, and its properties as a functional food. Now it is recommended for its positive effects against COVID, but before it had been recommended to help prevent cardiovascular or neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's," says Cristina. "The best promotion is to allow consumers to try it, because they will surely come back for more, and that is what we are focusing our efforts on, since it is a product that has yet to be discovered by many consumers."
